Monthly Play-in Sessions
We get together with other recorder players one Friday evening per month typically from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Our volunteer leaders make the sessions varied and fun. Everyone, member or not, is welcome. Support will be available to anyone who is new to or becoming reacquainted with their recorder.
We meet at Westwood Unitarian Congregation located at 11135 - 65 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
Bring your recorders and a music stand.
For 2012 we will be meeting on the following Fridays with leaders as noted:
January 20 - Vince Kelly
February 17 - Margriet Haagsma
March 16
April will not have a play-in, since we're planning on another gala concert.
May 11
June 8 - Donna Mae Mohrmann
We are still looking for people to lead or conduct our March and May play-in sessions. You do not have to be an experienced conductor to lead our relaxed, collegial and enthusiastic monthly group of recorder players. Some choose to lead their session from within the ensemble rather than conduct it. Others choose to share leadership of a session with another person. Please contact us if you are interesting in volunteering or have any questions about our play-ins.
Starting in February, we will dedicate the beginning portion of our monthly play-in evenings to selections from Volume 3—Italian Music, of the Schott Recorder Consort Anthology.
The Schott Recorder Consort Anthology is a six-volume set of music from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Consisting mostly of four-part music, there are also duets and trios, as well as five- and six-part pieces. The six volumes are broken down primarily by geographic area—music from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, etc.—with the exception of the first volume, which focuses on fifteenth century music. The music is presented in score format. The individual volumes of the Anthology are available at or via local music stores or online for about $25–$30 each. Members can use their music store discount when purchasing these books.
The intent of starting with selections from the Anthology is that it will allow those players, who are less comfortable sight-reading, to practice the music beforehand. For the remainder of the 2011/2012 play-in season we will be playing from Volume 3—Italian Music, which means that people aren't forced to purchase a complete set at once. Many ERS members already have one, two or more of these books in their collection. The ERS library has recently acquired a complete set, which will be available to the leaders. We're hoping most people will show up with their volume, so that any newcomers can be invited to read off a neighbour's copy.
