Performance: When opportunities come our way, players are invited to prepare some pieces for the event. Past events are: Gala Concerts (usually in the spring) and Christmas performances, most recently at seniors' centres.
You may also choose to perform at a concert as a soloist, duet or small consort without being a member of an ensemble.
An ERS Ensemble is often organized in January for the purpose of performing at the spring Gala Concert.

As you may know, my basement holds a large collection of recorder music of all styles and eras which I’m keen to explore – I don’t think even I know quite what’s lurking in the depths of some of my filing cabinets….. Playing level will be easy/medium (there could be occasional pointers on style and recorder technique if people find this useful) and there would be no commitment to performing, though there could be opportunities if everyone is keen. The intention is to enjoy exploring music, bring some pieces to a befitting level of playing, and have fun. Cheers, Vince

About Vince:
When he says he is "keen to explore" what lurks in his basement, we know that includes sharing all of that with us, too.
Vince's enthusiasm for the recorder is wide ranging. Primarily, our society knows him as a strong volunteer who encourages our musical development through ensembles, reading/playing sessions and performance. Behind his gentle manner in conducting any sessions, is a recorder player with a professional level education. He holds a performance diploma from the Royal School of Music in London, England - having studied under a prominent solo recorder artist. In Edmonton, he has guided another player to her ARCT recorder certification, too.
We have been the beneficiaries of his arrangements. Notably, he goes back to facsimiles of original scores from Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque masters, and makes them accessible to our 21st century expectations. Modern music catches his eyes and ears, too; he has arranged modern music for us, such as "I'll Take the A Train" and "The Theme from Star Wars".
Vince composes his own music - for his level of performance, especially when it's accompanied by guitar, but also for our ensembles in SATB - or with sopranino and/or with great bass and/or violin and/or ....whatever fits! Sometimes what fits comes from his collection of assorted early music instruments - harpsichord, crumhorns, and viola de gambas.

About Play-Ins
We get together simply to play -- trying some new and old repertoire, playing tried and true early music, testing modern pieces or exploring multi-part music. There's no pressure to make it perfect; we experiment with musical elements - or simply celebrate managing a tricky passage! Each month's play-in is led by a different volunteer who chooses a variety of music with varied playing difficulty.
Non-members, as well as members, are welcome.
The program is simply drop-in.
No charge; no advance registration.
Music is supplied.
Support is available to anyone who is new or becoming reacquainted with their recorder(s).
Do bring your recorders and a music stand.

2014-2015 Full Schedule
7 - 9 pm on Fridays
October 3
November 7 led by Jan P. featuring jazz and klezmer music
December 5 led by Linda Jacklin
Twelve players revelled in 7 & 8 part music, including some double choir pieces.
Many thanks to everyone who attended so we could experience such lush
harmonies.
January 16 led by David Brown, who provided terrific scores for guitar and recorder!
February 13 led by Janet Couch, who brought early music and challenged us with
white note counting!
March 13 more modern music from Jan
April - no play-in due to the Gala Concert on April 11
May 8 - led by Linda, who brought her favourites
June 12 - led by Vince Kelly, who, given his knowledge of historical styles, enlivened our
pieces by showing us how to express the scores musically. Such was understood by players of the time, but was not passed down in written form with any notation.
Play-In Leadership - if you are up for leading, please contact us.
You do not have to be an experienced conductor to lead our relaxed, collegial and enthusiastic monthly group of recorder players. Some choose to lead their session from within the ensemble rather than conduct it. Others choose to share leadership of a session with another person. Please contact us if you are interesting in volunteering or have any questions about our play-ins.
